โš ๏ธ Don't fall for the name: "hardwood" does NOT mean the wood is hard! Balsa is a HARDWOOD and it's the softest, lightest wood of all. The category is about the tree type, not the wood's hardness.

Exam technique: the question shows a photo + asks "name this wood & give two properties". Use the appearance clues (colour + grain pattern) to name it, then quote properties, then a use. 1 mark each โ€” don't write essays.

3. Structure of wood โ€” 3 facts that always come up

  • Trees carry water up through xylem tubes (fibres).
  • From the side, the tubes show as dark lines = grain. Wood is weak along the grain.
  • Dark rings = age rings โ€” count them to age a tree. Dark rings form from slow winter growth (denser).

5. Preparation & stock forms

  • Wood must be dried to 10โ€“20% water content: stabilises it + kills fungus/insects.
  • Air drying: 8โ€“16 months, reduces cracking & twisting. Kiln drying: 6โ€“8 weeks, quick & cost-effective.
  • Stock forms: Plank ยท Strip ยท Square ยท Veneer ยท Dowel (dowels have grooves so glue can grip).
  • Boards bigger than a tree = glue planks together with sash clamps, alternating grain curve direction so twisting doesn't multiply.

Saw blade rules: thick blade = straight cuts, thin blade = curves. Small teeth = harder materials, large teeth remove more material quickly.

7. Joining โ€” the marks-heavy section

  • Adhesives: Epoxy resin (2-part, 10 min, thermoset) ยท Cascamite (waterproof, 3 h, strong) ยท PVA (2 h, sets clear, soaks into fibres) ยท Acrylic cement (1 min, solvent, capillary action โ€” plastic) ยท Contact adhesive (15 min, goes tacky then pressed together).
  • Joints: butt, cross halving, finger, mortise & tenon, mitre, lap, dowel, dovetail, housing. Terminology: halving (corner/bridle/tee), through vs blind, tongue & groove, biscuit joint, rebate.
  • Knock-down fittings (flat-pack, e.g. IKEA): corner blocks, scan fitting, cam lock, modesty block โ€” assemble with just a screwdriver/Allen key.
  • Screws: pilot hole (stops splitting) โ†’ clearance hole (lets outer panel slide) โ†’ countersink (head sits flush).
  • Nails: dovetail (angled, won't pull out) ยท staggered (prevents splitting down grain) ยท clinch (end bent over).

8. Construction, production & jigs

  • Frame construction = narrow boards joined (mortise & tenon). Carcase construction = solid box of panels joined end-to-end (lap joints).
  • Production: one-off (1, skilled, expensive) โ†’ batch (4โ€“50, jigs) โ†’ mass (1000+, production line) โ†’ continuous (never stops, e.g. paper).
  • Mould = material flows INTO the cavity ยท Former = soft material pulled OVER the shape ยท Drilling jig = locates holes accurately & quickly ยท Holding device = holds & lines up material.

9. Finishing

  • Abrasive papers: glass paper / aluminium oxide paper โ€” used to finish woods, multiple grades (coarse โ†’ fine).

โญ How to Get A* โ€” the step-by-step path

Step 1 โ€” Learn the ID tables (Week 1)

Photos of all 10 woods + 4 boards until you can name any sample in seconds. Use the photos in the Woods tab: cover the name, say appearance โ†’ properties โ†’ uses. 30 min a day for a week = done.

Step 2 โ€” Learn the process chains (Week 2)

For each stage โ€” preparation โ†’ marking out โ†’ shaping โ†’ joining โ†’ finishing โ€” be able to list the tools/machines and say why each step exists. Questions love "why do we dry wood / why a pilot hole / why alternate grain in plywood".

Step 3 โ€” Joint scoring + terminology (Week 3)

๐Ÿ’ก Because softwoods grow fast, they're cheaper and more sustainable โ€” forests regrow on short rotations. Hardwoods grow slowly, so they're more expensive and scarcer.

What is the structure of wood?

  • Trees use tubes (xylem) to transport water up the tree โ€” we call these fibres.
  • From the side, the fibres show as dark lines โ€” this is the grain.
  • Wood is weak along the grain. (Classic exam question: "How will this break?" โ€” answer: it splits along the grain, following the fibres.)
  • You can count the dark rings on a tree to determine its age โ€” these are age rings.
  • The dark lines are denser and formed from slow growth during winter; light rings are fast summer growth.

โš ๏ธ Deck note: the class deck lists Balsa with the description "swirly grain, medium darkness, high density, durable, high quality furniture, tall ships" โ€” that description looks copied from Oak by mistake. Balsa is actually the LIGHTEST, softest wood. Ask your teacher which they want in the exam; the photo in the deck shows the real balsa sample.

Manufactured boards

Manufactured board is a composite material made from wood particles, fibres and veneers bound together with adhesives to create a wood-like panel.

  • Advantages: improved properties โ€” directional strength, stable dimensions, cheaper, uniform, stable.
  • Disadvantages: some are easily damaged or soak up water; some weigh more or cost more.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

  • Useful when you need thicker material without the weight/cost of solid wood.

Environmental impacts โ€” softwood vs hardwood

  • Fast growth rates: forests replenished and harvested on a shorter, sustainable rotation.
  • Carbon sequestration: growing trees absorb COโ‚‚, locking it into the wood fibre for the product's whole lifecycle.
  • Lower energy processing: sawmills burn leftover green residues (bark, sawdust) on site to power kiln-drying and machinery โ€” less fossil fuel.

๐Ÿ‚ Hardwoods (slower, more impact)

  • Slow growth cycles: hardwood trees take decades or centuries to mature โ€” slow to replace.
  • Harvesting mature hardwoods removes carbon sinks that took 100+ years to build.
  • Often transported long distances (tropical hardwoods) โ€” higher embodied energy.
  • Choose certified/sustainable sources where possible.

Creating boards from planks

  • Planks can only be as big as the tree allows โ€” so you glue multiple planks together to make a board.
  • Sash clamps are used to glue large pieces together.
  • Natural woods bend and twist โ€” when you glue planks into a board, the bending could multiply.
  • So you glue the curve of the grain in alternating directions โ€” each plank's twist cancels the next one out.

Marking-out methods

  • Mark out on all sides โ€” keeps cutting accurate and square (you can see the line from every direction).
  • Shade out waste material (scribble over it) โ€” shows exactly where to cut and stops you cutting the wrong piece.
  • Marking knives are used for precision โ€” the knife line also creates a track for saws and chisels, and prevents wood splitting beyond the line.

Working face & working edge

A board's working face and working edge are the two reference surfaces that all measurements are taken from.

  • This dates back to when boards were planed by hand โ€” you couldn't rely on every side being parallel, so two surfaces were designated as reference surfaces.
  • It's still a good idea today. The marks can also mean front and top.
  • Everything is measured from the working face/edge, so a mistake never propagates from an uneven surface.

FPT โ€” Mark out a finger joint

Teacher instruction: Mark out a finger joint on the wood (x / ยผy / y dimensions on the side profile).

  1. Mark all the way around the wood โ€” this helps when you cut it out.
  2. Scribble the waste material โ€” prevents cutting the wrong piece.
  3. Transfer the profile from the end face down both sides so saw cuts line up.
The finger joint has a large surface area for glue โ†’ strong + looks like interlocking fingers. Cutting it accurately = mark both sides, cut just on the waste side of the line, then trim to the line with a chisel.

Laminating and steaming

Steaming (bending)

  • Problem: cutting a curved shape out of a solid board wastes material and is weak across the grain.
  • Steaming softens the resin in the wood, which allows it to be bent while soft.
  • Steam chamber: wood is left in hot steam until the resin softens, then bent around a former/jig and left to set.

Laminating

  • Thin/flexible pieces of wood are glued together and held in shape; when the glue sets, it stays in that shape.
  • Vacuum bag โ€” uses air pressure to hold the laminate in shape.
  • A jig โ€” uses clamps to hold it in shape.

Exam difference: steaming bends ONE piece of solid wood (resin softened by heat/steam). Laminating bends MANY thin pieces glued together. Both need a former/jig to hold the shape while setting.

Teacher instruction: Choose one of these products. Create a blue foam former and laminate using the bagpress.

  1. Choose your product design (organiser).
  2. Create a blue foam former โ€” the foam is shaped to the curve you want, then the flexible plywood is pressed over/into it.
  3. Laminate using the bagpress (vacuum bag) โ€” air pressure holds the plies tight to the former.
  4. Remember: flexible plywood will only bend to a maximum radius before breaking โ€” design your former curve within the limit.
  5. Finish the edge of the product using a jack plane.

How to answer these in the exam: pick 2โ€“3 joints and justify each score with ONE reason, e.g. "Finger joint โ€” high surface area gives a strong glue bond" / "Butt joint โ€” end grain glues poorly and there's little surface area, so it's weak." Justify = the marks.

Knock-down fittings

Knock-down fittings are hardware components designed to join panels together temporarily or permanently without traditional wood glue and clamps.

They're heavily used in flat-pack furniture (e.g. IKEA) โ€” manufactured quickly, shipped flat, assembled at home with basic tools like a screwdriver or Allen key.

  1. Drill a pilot hole through outer and inner panels โ€” diameter slightly bigger than the core of the screw; prevents the wood splitting.
  2. Drill a clearance hole in the outer panel โ€” diameter of the threads; stops the screw gripping the outer panel so it pulls both panels together.
  3. Drill a countersink โ€” angled hole so the head lies flush with the surface.
  4. Insert the screw with a manual screwdriver (controlled torque).
Common exam trap: mixing up pilot and clearance. Pilot = core diameter, both panels, stops splitting. Clearance = thread diameter, outer panel only, lets the screw pull panels together.

"Identify the wood" questions

  1. Appearance clues: colour (yellowish = pine, red-brown = cedar/mahogany, pale white = jelutong/balsa) + grain (long thick = softwoods, swirly = oak, ribbon stripe = meranti, freckles = beech).
  2. Category: say softwood or hardwood too โ€” often a mark.
  3. Properties: quote the deck table (density, durability, workability, water resistance).
  4. Use: connect to properties โ€” e.g. cedar repels insects โ†’ clothing storage.
Never write "it's hard/soft" as a property of hardwood/softwood โ€” Balsa is a hardwood and is soft! Say density, durability, stability, workability instead.

Joint scoring questions

  1. Fill the table fast using your benchmarks (Joining tab).
  2. Justification = property โ†’ consequence: "Finger joint has a large surface area, so the glue bond is strong."

FPT (Focused Practical Task) strategy

FPTs are the timed practicals: finger joint, laminated organiser, KD fitting + drilling jig, screws & nails. Marks come from process, not the finished look.

Common mistakes (lose marks here)

  • โœ— Saying hardwood = hard. Tree type decides the category.
  • โœ— Mixing pilot vs clearance hole diameters.
  • โœ— "Describe" answers written as "Explain" (no because).
  • โœ— Forgetting wood is weak along the grain in break/strength questions.
  • โœ— Naming MDF for outdoor use โ€” it can't get wet.
  • โœ— Writing "glue" instead of a named adhesive with its properties.
  • โœ— No justification in the joint scoring table.
