From a chat-room 886 in 2000 to 胆子真是肥嘟嘟的 in 2026: 250 memes, each with where it came from and what it was actually doing. Twenty-seven year sections, 27 long-form “meme of the year” pieces, five eras — inside one HTML file that loads nothing from the network.
“oh i expected same thing for every year” — after a first version that only covered 2026, then “maybe add more memes for every year and also add 2000-2007”. The unit of the deliverable stopped being the meme and became the year: every year needed the same structure, not just the years with good material.
Each year opens with a numeral and a one-line note, then one tier-1 “meme of the year” card with a three-paragraph origin story plus two boxes (why it is this one, how to use it), then 5–11 short cards with a single origin line and one paragraph. 2000–2007 is thin by nature (6–9); 2009 onward holds 9–12.
meme-history.html is the 27-year page. 2026-meme-history.html is the deep version of the current year — 47 entries arranged by month, with the long research on 胆子真是肥嘟嘟的, 牛来, MJ and the 《我的前半生》 rerun. The main page drops to 12 entries for 2026 and links out to it.
Full-text search over name, origin, story, why and use. A bare four-digit year takes a different branch and returns exactly that year's entries instead of every card that happens to mention the number. Tag pills filter by mechanism; both compose, and the count label reads 找到 N / 250.
Paper palette, hard edges, no gradients on text. Cards avoid breaking across pages; the year numeral stays with its section. The whole thing is one file, so a printed copy and an emailed copy are the same bytes.
A flat object: y (year), name, tag, tier, origin, story[]. Tier 1 adds why, use, src. No IDs, no relationships — the year is the only grouping, which is why a new year costs one array.
Five ranges with a paragraph each: 2000–2007 网络方言, 2008–2012 围观, 2013–2017 造词, 2018–2022 短视频, 2023–2026 抽象与情绪. They are an argument about how memes were made, not decoration — each one names the medium that produced them.
Built at render time: every field joined into one lowercased string on the card's dataset. 250 cards × ~150 characters is small enough that filtering is a loop, not an index — no library, no debounce needed.
One JSON blob (106,252 bytes) inside <script type="application/json">. Rendering is innerHTML from a template string, so the page has no build step, no framework and no hydration — open it from a USB stick and it works.

| Range | Era | The argument |
|---|---|---|
| 2000–2007 | 网络方言时代 | Memes grew out of typing habits — 886, 斑竹, 灌水 — not out of news events. Cheap bandwidth, expensive minutes. |
| 2008–2012 | 围观时代 | Material came from news, the Spring Festival Gala and TV dramas; the job of a meme was to close a case on something. |
| 2013–2017 | 造词时代 | Users started manufacturing words (人艰不拆, 十动然拒) and compressing whole paragraphs into four characters. |
| 2018–2022 | 短视频时代 | The unit stopped being a word and became a clip and an audio track; lifespan fell from years to weeks. |
| 2023–2026 | 抽象与情绪时代 | AI zeroed the cost of二创, archaeology became mainstream, and memes stopped being funny first — they speak for people first. |
胆子真是肥嘟嘟的, 命运你假糍粑 and 来杯好茶摇一摇 were searched individually before writing; the 2026 round-ups were read for the month-by-month frame. That pass produced the 47-entry detail page, which this page condenses to 12.
Cross-checked with 《咬文嚼字》's annual top-ten (班味, 松弛感, 抽象 / 活人感, 赛博对账, 预制××, ××基础××不基础) and the 2025 state language-resource list (DeepSeek, 敬自己一杯, 如何呢又能怎).
The eight kings rest on documented events: 馒头案, 华南虎照片, 木子美, 芙蓉姐姐, 2005 超女, 痞子蔡's novel. Each king links its Wikipedia entry on the card.
These memes are heavily documented and the events are not in dispute; the wording, framing and the “why it is this one” judgement are mine. No entry quotes a figure I did not have a source for.
Tags describe the mechanism, not a balanced taxonomy: 造词 92, 影视二创 64, 围观事件 51, 网络方言 20, 谐音空耳 12, 城市文旅 5, AI与科技 3, plus 反差萌 / 自嘲情绪 / 可爱生物 with one each. A perfectly even split would be a lie about how memes are made.
